The single most effective way to keep frameless shower glass clear is to squeegee it after every shower and wipe it down weekly with an ammonia-free cleaner. That one habit prevents the two things that cloud shower glass over time: hard-water mineral spots and soap scum. Both are buildup, and buildup is far easier to prevent than to remove. Once mineral deposits etch into the glass surface, no amount of scrubbing fully brings the clarity back. Why Frameless Shower Glass Spots and Scums Up
Those cloudy spots aren't dirt. They're minerals. When water dries on glass, it leaves behind dissolved calcium and magnesium as visible white or gray spots, a process called hard-water spotting. Soap scum is the second layer: a waxy film that forms when soap reacts with those same minerals and clings to the glass. Left alone, both build into a stubborn haze.
Much of the North Bay has moderately hard water, so shower glass here spots faster than in soft-water regions. The good news is that frameless glass is one continuous, gasket-free surface with no metal frame channels for grime to hide in, which makes it easier to keep clean than framed enclosures, as long as you stay ahead of the buildup.
The Daily Habit That Does 90% of the Work
Keep a squeegee in the shower and run it down the glass after every use. It takes fifteen seconds and removes the water before it can dry and leave minerals behind. This one habit prevents the large majority of water spotting, and it requires no product at all.
Ventilation is the quiet second half. Running the bathroom fan during and for 15 to 20 minutes after a shower pulls out the humidity that feeds mildew and speeds up mineral deposits. Between the squeegee and the fan, you've eliminated most of the conditions that cloud glass in the first place. If you do only two things, do these two.
Your Weekly Cleaning Routine
Once a week, give the glass a proper clean. Use an ammonia-free glass cleaner or a simple homemade solution of equal parts white vinegar and warm water, which cuts mineral deposits and soap film without harsh chemistry. Spray it on, let it sit a minute or two on any hazy areas, then wipe with a soft microfiber cloth and finish with a dry pass so nothing air-dries back onto the surface.
A few rules keep the glass — and its hardware — safe:
- Skip abrasive pads and powders. Scouring pads and gritty cleansers can scratch glass and dull metal finishes permanently.
- Avoid ammonia-based cleaners. Ammonia can damage certain hardware finishes and any protective coating on the glass. Ammonia-free is the standard we recommend.
- Don't use vinegar on adjacent natural stone. If your shower has marble or travertine, keep the vinegar solution off the stone — acids etch it. Use it on the glass only.
For deposits that have been building a while, a dedicated non-abrasive glass cleaner and a little patience beat aggressive scrubbing every time. Don't Forget the Hardware and Seals
Frameless enclosures rely on precision hardware, and B & L installs it in 20 different finishes, from polished chrome to brushed bronze and satin brass. Living finishes like bronze and brass are the most sensitive, so clean them with only a damp cloth and mild, ammonia-free soap. Harsh chemicals can strip or discolor them. Dry the hinges and handles after cleaning to prevent water spots on the metal, too.
Check the clear vinyl sweeps and seals along the bottom and edges every few months and wipe them clean. And keep one design fact in mind: frameless showers are not water-tight by design. The small gaps at the hinges and panels are intentional, because they let water drain and air move, so a little water at the threshold is normal, not a leak. Aiming the showerhead away from the door and toward the back wall keeps water where it belongs and your glass cleaner, longer.
A Note on Hard Water in Wine Country
Because Sonoma, Napa, and Marin water carries more minerals than soft-water areas, spotting can set in faster here than the average cleaning guide assumes, which is exactly why the daily squeegee matters more, not less. If your home is on well water or you already fight limescale on faucets, expect to be diligent with the squeegee and consider a whole-home water softener, which reduces spotting on glass, fixtures, and dishes alike. Newer enclosures can also be ordered with a factory-applied protective glass coating that makes water bead off and cleaning easier. Ask about it before your glass is fabricated.
